When preparing for a workout, there are always a few essentials to have ready. Comfortable shoes, headphones and your favorite music are likely standard issue for most individuals; but would you include a cup of coffee for the pre-workout must haves?
Coffee consumption as a pre-workout ritual might be surprising to some , but recent studies have shown drinking coffee can help provide a boost during exercise. Since caffeine increases the number of fatty acids circulating in the bloodstream, consuming it prior to a workout allows muscles to absorb and burn those fats for fuel, therefore saving the body's small reserves of carbohydrates for later in the exercise period.
According to Cynthia Sass, MPH, RD, the maximum amount of caffeine recommended for enhancing performance with minimal side effects is about 16 ounces of coffee for a 150-pound individual.
Nutritionist Zoe Bingley Pullin also promotes the benefits of coffee consumption prior to athletic exercise, but also warns to make sure it’s in moderation due to the spike caffeine provides.
"While adrenaline will give you the ability to exercise harder, the ramification is that caffeine is actually a diuretic -- so it is a bit of a catch-22,” Bingley Pullin said.
This means a constant supply of fluids (such as water or sports drinks) must be kept in the body during the workout to nourish muscles correctly and maintain good energy levels -- particularly if you are exercising for long periods of time.
Additional adrenaline isn’t the only benefit to coffee consumption before exercise, there are a myriad of functional benefits such as improved circulation and muscle preservation. Check out this list from health.com for more reasons why coffee is helpful with exercise.
As you look for ways to enhance your workout performance, it’s good to have the proper gear, which now may include your coffee brewer!
